25 Years of Strengthening Community Through Service and Connection: Join Us for Piper Shores’ Volunteer Fair

At Piper Shores, we know how essential volunteers are to advancing the missions of local nonprofits—and how strong community connections help those missions thrive. That’s why we’re inviting you to participate in our Volunteer Opportunities Fair: A Piper Shores Building Community Event on Friday, April 17, from 2:30–5:00 PM.

This year’s theme, “25 Years of Strengthening Community Through Service and Connection,” reflects the relationships built over the past quarter century between Piper Shores, local nonprofits, and the volunteers who make this work possible. Held the week before National Volunteer Week (April 19–25), this event continues that tradition—connecting important organizations with passionate volunteers from the Greater Portland area and our vibrant community of 450+ residents.

“As a mission-driven community, volunteering plays an important role in creating meaningful connections both within Piper Shores and throughout the greater community,” said Phil Jean, CEO of Piper Shores. “The Volunteer Opportunities Fair brings residents and local organizations together, creating opportunities for people to share their time and talents in ways that make a real difference.”

For residents like Jeff von Munkwitz-Smith, volunteering is a meaningful way to stay active, connect with others, and give back. Jeff moved to Piper Shores’ Meadows campus in 2023 with his wife, Lisa, after living in Portland for eight years. “Particularly for residents, staying active is important. You’re more apt to be healthy longer if you’re active,” Jeff shared. “Volunteering is always something that I wanted to do. When I retired, I volunteered quite a bit when I was still working. But I wanted to continue doing it in retirement. Helping other people is good for you—it’s rewarding to give back in that way and engage with people, especially after the hardships of the pandemic. This has been so fun for me.”
