Piper Shores Elects Five New Board Members and Two New Officers

Piper Shores recently announced that its board of trustees has elected five new board members and two new officers to its 14-member board.

“The Board of Trustees of Pipers Shores is delighted to be welcoming five extraordinary new board members to our roster, each of whom has a profound understanding of issues related to finance and investing, geriatrics, assisted living, physical and mental health,” said Stephen deCastro, Chair of the Board. “We are also pleased to be nominating a new slate of officers to our board.  This new team of officers and board members is dedicated to the long-term success of Piper Shores. We are grateful for their willingness to volunteer and to lead.” These board changes take place just as Piper Shores prepares for the opening of its new assisted living and memory care residences at Holbrook.

Five new board members are:

James A. Bennett, Ph.D., CFA, CAIA 

Jim is Deputy Chief Investment Officer at Maine PERS, where he helps oversee the investment of the state’s defined benefit plan assets. He received his bachelor’s degree in engineering and economics from Dartmouth college in 1986. Following a stint as a financial analyst at UNUM, he attended graduate school and earned a doctorate in finance in 1994 from The University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining Maine PERS, Jim was an Associate Professor at the University of Southern Maine, where he taught courses in financial management, valuation and financial modeling at the undergraduate and MBA level. Prior to USM, Jim taught at UMass-Boston, the University of Otago (in New Zealand), and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Jim’s research interests lie in the field of investments, and has focused on topics of practical interest to investment managers. Jim holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designations, and has served on the board and as President of the Maine CFA society. 

Marilyn R. Gugliucci, MA, PhD

Dr. Gugliucci is a professor and the director of Geriatrics Education and Research at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is also Director of U-ExCEL (UNE~Exercise and Conditioning for Easier Living) Fitness/Wellness Program for older adults. Dr. Gugliucci is a Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society, the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE), and the Maine Gerontological Society. She serves on the national GSA Council and is the former Chair of the Gerontological Society of America Health Sciences Section. During 2008-2010, she served as AGHE President. Dr. Gugliucci is a founding board member of the Maine Council on Aging, and SAGE Maine, and serves on the Ethics Committee for the Hospice of Southern Maine. She has served on the Maine Legal Services for the Elderly board for 12 years, St. Andre Health Care for 6 years and the Southern Maine Agency on Aging board for 6 years.

Raymond “Chip” Kelley

Chip Kelley is the Commercial Banking Team Leader for Key Bank’s New England District, responsible for Middle Market Banking in Maine, New Hampshire and Eastern Massachusetts.  He manages teams based in Portland and Boston.  He joined Key in 2005 after 13 years at Bank of America in Portland, Maine.  Chip began his banking career with Shawmut Bank in Boston in 1985.  He also spent two years in the early 1990’s with Bank South in Atlanta. Chip currently serves on the Boards of North Atlantic Venture Capital Corp., Maine & Co., Maine Technology Institute and Maine International Trade.  He also serves on the Finance Committee of the United Way of Greater Portland. Chip is a graduate of Colby College and he lives in Cape Elizabeth.

Miriam Leonard, MHA, FACHE

Ms. Leonard is chief operating officer of Franklin Community Health Network. Previously, she served as vice president for Value Improvement and co-led the MaineHealth Center for Performance Improvement. While there, Ms. Leonard guided the implementation of “Lean Daily Management” at several member organizations, and assists with operational improvements as well as cultural change. Her involvement at MaineHealth includes leadership participation in MaineHealth Quality Committee of the Board of Trustees; MaineHealth Quality Improvement Council; MaineHealth Patient Experience Workgroup; and MaineHealth Mentoring Program.

Malcolm Rogers, MD

Dr. Rogers enjoyed a long career at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he focused on the interface between medical and surgical illness and psychiatric conditions, and where he also operated a private adult psychiatry practice. Since moving to Maine in 2008, Dr. Rogers has served at the Portland-based VA Clinic and on an on-going National VA Research Project, and is actively involved in Maine’s Psychiatric Professional Organization, Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicians and Konbit Sante, an organization working to improve the capacity of the healthcare system in the north of Haiti.

 Two new officers are:

Vice Chair: Robert E. Danielson is the managing partner of the Law Offices of Robert E. Danielson, a practice that focuses on all areas of land use, estate planning, and small business planning. He also serves as the director of St. Joseph’s Manor.

Secretary: Susan J. Guerette is the director of network management at Aetna. She is also an attorney, a registered nurse, and a certified case manager. She is actively involved with Preble Street Resource Center and the TD Beach to Beacon Road Race.

Retaining their officer roles are Stephen deCastro, Chairman, and Karen Milliken, Treasurer.
