Farmers market part of healthy eating at Piper Shores

As part of the ongoing effort to enhance the well being of our residents, Piper Shores dedicated this past July as Health and Wellness Month. Each week focused on a different aspect of the theme, with the final week devoted to healthy eating.

To close the week, Piper Shores invited Highland Avenue Greenhouse, a local Scarborough family-owned garden center and farmers market, to set up at the entrance of Piper Shores. The farmers market was open to Piper Shores’ residents and staff. Many visited the booth, which was overflowing with delicious, locally grown vegetables including green beans, native corn, new potatoes, kale, tomatoes and several selections of leafy green lettuce.

It was a beautiful day, and residents and staff both really enjoyed the farmer’s market. So many stopped by and it was a great way to introduce the idea of adding more nutrient rich, fresh foods into our diets.

The farmers market was so popular that Piper Shores invited Highland Avenue Greenhouseto come again in September and October.

“We want our residents to be vibrant inside and out. Eating healthy food is a part of that equation and integral to our holistic approach to whole-person care,” said Andrea C. Killiard, Marketing and Life Enrichment Director at Piper Shores.
