Keynote Speaker and Panel of Industry Experts Will Inform and Encourage Attendees to Plan Ahead Carefully to Navigate Long-Term Care Options Successfully

Scarborough, Maine, September 23, 2008 – Piper Shores, Maine’s first and only nonprofit lifecare retirement community, today announced it will be hosting a complimentary educational seminar called “Long Term Care: Are You Prepared?” on Thursday, October 2nd, starting at 8:00 AM. The seminar will be held at Hannaford Hall, located in the Abromson Center at the University of Southern Maine in Portland. Following a continental breakfast, the event will feature presentations from a panel of experts who will discuss health trends, estate and financial planning, lifecare and other insurance options.

The seminar will begin with a keynote presentation from Bill Becker, a financial advisor at Edward Jones Investments in Falmouth. Mr. Becker will discuss helping his mother with the transition from living in a family home in New Jersey to a long-term care community in Maine. Attendees will hear first hand the steps that Bill and his family took while investigating options, establishing a financial plan and then finally making the move to Maine.

Dr. Joel Botler, MD
Joel Botler is the Associate Program Director for the Department of Family Medicine and Director of Geriatrics at MMC; the Suzi Osher Endowed Chair of Geriatrics at MMC; and the medical director of Elder Care Services for Maine Health. Dr. Botler attended Princeton University and graduated from SUNY- Downstate Medical School in 1979. He completed his Internal Medicine training at MMC in 1982 and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. He received added qualifications in Geriatrics in 1988 and 2000.

Deborah Riddell
As Executive Director, Deb is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Piper Shores community. As a lifecare expert, Deb’s role at Piper Shores is divided into three primary responsibilities: providing support to the Board of Directors, the residents and the employees of Piper Shores. She is the licensed administrator for The Holbrook’s assisted living and skilled nursing care centers at Piper Shores. Deb is licensed both by the State of Maine as well as the U. S. Government.

Susan Thomas, Esquire
Susan has more than twenty years of experience as a director and associate of law, currently serving as an estate planning attorney for Epstein & O’Donovan LLP, one of the few firms in Maine with a practice dedicated to estate planning and estate and trust administration. Susan also currently serves as a Trustee of the Susan Curtis Foundation and is the past president and Director of Foundation 51, a nonprofit educational organization. She has lectured widely on estate planning, estate administration, charitable giving and other related topics.

Kerry Peabody
Kerry has specialized in long-term care insurance for sixteen years, with several years of experience as a long-term care insurance medical underwriter and as a national sales director for a major insurance carrier. Today, as an independent agent specializing in long term care options, he works with families and businesses to help them prepare for increased healthcare costs associated with aging.
