An Interview with Bill Caron, Chairman of the Board for Piper Shores
As Maine’s only nonprofit lifecare retirement community, Piper Shores provides its 300+ residents with quality housing on 138-acres on the ocean plus guaranteed access to on-site healthcare, assisted living and skilled nursing care all for one predictable monthly fee. “It’s a complex business model,” relates Board Chair, Bill Caron, “one that includes running a continuum of healthcare services, maintaining a large piece of real estate and providing on-site resident services such as dining, transportation and social functions.”
Providing guidance and leadership for Piper Shores requires a strong board of directors. According to Caron, the Piper Shores Board of Directors represents a strong cross-section of community leadership in Southern Maine. Individual board members have professional backgrounds in finance, insurance, marketing, hospitality, real estate, healthcare, fundraising and non-profit governance. As president and CEO of MaineHealth and an accountant by trade, Chairman Caron brings both a healthcare perspective and a penchant for numbers to the Piper Shores Board.
“In the Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) world, Piper Shores is considered a young community at five years old,” says Mr. Caron. “Yet, the financial quality and occupancy indicators at Piper Shores are several years ahead of the curve in development.”
With a strong balance sheet, profitable operations and a disciplined management team, Piper Shores is now planning for CCAC accreditation in 2007 as part of a strategic planning process now underway at the Board and management levels. CCAC accreditation is a prestigious designation held by a very small number of communities around the country. Accreditation involves a yearlong preparation and evaluation process, one in which that Mr. Caron is confident that Piper Shores will succeed.
With strong resources on the board and a strong management company in Life Care Services, LLC (LCS), Piper Shores’ management has the ingredients necessary to contribute to a strong community. “The promise of Piper Shores is to provide both housing and healthcare for our residents now and in the future,” says Chairman Caron. “I would like Piper Shores residents to know that this board has a keen sense of its responsibility to them and a firm commitment to meet theses needs.”
William Caron is the President and Chief Executive Officer for MaineHealth, an integrated delivery system of healthcare providers serving southern, western and central Maine. Prior to his current position, Mr. Caron was Executive Vice President and Treasurer at MaineHealth and Vice President and Treasurer at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. He previously was a Partner with Ernst & Young and headed their East Region healthcare consulting practice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received his Masters degree in Accounting from Northeastern University and his undergraduate degree from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.
